Ariel Hach (A Space NY): An Organizer's Perspective

Ariel Hach (A Space NY): An Organizer's Perspective

Can you give us the elevator pitch for your company, A. Space NY?

A Space is a design-oriented organizing company that specializes in spatial solutions and closet build outs: Creating functional spaces without compromising the aesthetic.

Tell us about your path to this line of work:

I have lived in New York City for 18 years. The tradeoff to this wonderful experience has been moving A LOT and, therefore, getting a lot of practice problem-solving as to how household items will fit in extremely small spaces. I’ve gained a keen sense of spatial awareness, which has helped tremendously with all aspects of A Space.

What would you say your organizing ethos is? Or how you like to work?

I start by choosing products that fit my clients’ personal aesthetic in their home. Then I map out which products will be used in each space. I might not know where these items will be placed as that’s the puzzle. But having everything laid out before the job begins is key.

Are there any key differentiators you can share that have been key to growing your business to what it is today?

A Space is currently the only organizing business in New York City that offers a build-out option. This has given me the opportunity to transform even the smallest closets and apartments into spaces that are both functional and beautiful.

Have you always been an organized person?

Not at all! As a kid, I was a total procrastinator and, I’m sure my mother would say, a slob. One day, I realized how important it had become to me to display my clothes, shoes and bags in a beautiful way.

What initially drew you to SortJoy?

I love the one-stop shop aspect of Sort Joy. The chic but simplistic look can be used in literally every space.

What’s your best tip for someone looking to maximize a small space?

I always hang clothing from longest to shortest. This creates little spaces on the floor or the shelves where you can add bins or a shoe rack. Every square inch of free wall space can be utilized in a functional way. You just have to get creative!

Any common organizing advice you’d advise against or trends that you don’t like?

My biggest pet peeve is hangers that hold 6 pairs of pants or skirts. They are promoted as “space-saving,” but they are actually quite awkward, and when all of your hangers are not unified it becomes a mess.

If someone is feeling overwhelmed in their space, what’s the one piece of advice you would give them get started?

Hire me! If that’s not possible, then I suggest tackling one space at a time. Also, editing through your belongings is a crucial part of organizing. Sometimes you need help from friends and family to push you to get rid of stuff you don’t need.

What’s your favorite SortJoy product?

The large, sculpted bin is my favorite. Currently, there is nothing comparable of this size on the market.

Who has supported you along the way and who inspires you?

My repeat clients have been my biggest support system. They have given me the confidence I need to continue creating beautiful spaces day after day. Their willingness to allow me to be creative with their design while incorporating new and innovative products has been invaluable to my learning process and my success.

Anyone who has the courage to start their own business and put everything they have into making it successful inspires me.
